The Eating Man's Diet
By James Keough
At some point in the history of diets, gurus have proclaimed every type of food you can imagine either “the answer” or “the problem.” When it comes to hard, scientific data, however, things become less clear. And yet a recent study has shed some new light on dietary protein, linking it to both a feeling of satiety and to weight loss. The researchers found that in both normal-weight and obese humans, a high-protein diet produced the “highest levels” of the appetite-suppressing hormone PYY (peptide YY) and “the most pronounced satiety.” When they fed mice a high-protein diet over a long period of time, the mice ate less and lost weight—and showed high levels of PYY in their blood. Furthermore, mice bred to make them incapable of producing PYY became obese, but when given PYY, they lost weight. All this seems to point to a future role for both high levels of dietary protein and PYY in the fight against obesity, but the researchers caution that they don’t know enough to spell out what a high-protein weight loss diet would look like. Do-it-yourselfers take note, however, that the Atkins diet contains too much saturated fat to produce these results.
