Nutritional Supplements Boise ID

Our bodies make DIM from indole-3-carbinol (I3C), found in cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cabbage. I3C on its own has been shown to limit the most active form of estrogen, protecting against estrogen-related breast cancers. But new research shows DIM is more stable, safer, and protects against a broader range of cancers than I3C.

Stock Up for the New Year
Here are five nutritional supplements you might want to add to the all-natural section of your medicine cabinet this year, says Nicole Egenberger, ND, clinic director for New York City-based Remede Naturopathics and president of the New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

DIM (diindolylmethane)
What it does: Our bodies make DIM from indole-3-carbinol (I3C), found in cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cabbage. I3C on its own has been shown to limit the most active form of estrogen, protecting against estrogen-related breast cancers. But new research shows DIM is more stable, safer, and protects against a broader range of cancers than I3C.

Pinnitol
What it does
: Studies have found it restores ovulation and decreases testosterone levels—especially helpful for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. It also balances blood sugar levels and decreases insulin resistance, proving to be a new treatment for type-2 diabetes.

Pumpkinseed oil (curbita)

What it does: While it’s most commonly used to treat irritable bowel syndrome, small studies have shown these medicinal seeds, which contain amino acids, steroidal compounds, and omega fatty acids, may lower the risk of certain types of kidney stones and improve symptoms associated with enlarged prostates.

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and ivy leaf (Hedera helix) combo

What it does: Want to steer clear of antibiotics for bronchitis this winter? A recent study demonstrated this combination’s effectiveness at reducing cough and the duration of bacterial bronchitis in adults.

Acai (Euerpe oleracea)

What it does: Research has shown that this superfruit—packed with antioxidants, fiber, and essential fatty acids—boosts skin health, the immune system, and more. When freeze-dried and turned into powder, it has all the nutritional power of fresh acai.
