Soothe Sore Muscles Safely
Who knew there was such a thing as using too much sports cream? Unfortunately, last spring a 17-year-old high-school athlete from New York City died after she absorbed high levels of methyl salicylate, an anti-inflammatory found in sports creams such as Bengay and IcyHot. (This potent ingredient is found in other menthol products, like vaporizer solutions.) Tragically, this death is a reminder of the importance of following label instructions and heeding its warnings—and that not all over-the-counter products are safe, especially for children.
So if your little soccer star is feeling sore after the big game, choose an alternative sports creams that do that’s methyl salicylate-free. Look for creams containing Arnica montana, a homeopathic remedy that relieves pain from bruises, sprains, and muscle soreness.
While natural sports creams are a good option for soothing soreness, too often young athletes push through pain, ignoring their body’s warning signals. The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages children to listen to what their body is telling them, instead of ignoring or hiding injuries that could become worse. And keep in mind that sports creams are not the solution to pain; they merely offer relief.
