Practitioner's Corner—About Pets

By Bob and Susan Goldstein

In our experience, it seems like more and more people are seeking alternative treatments for their pets. They figure the kind of gentle care that works for them might just help their animals, too. What they really want, in fact, are strategies to prevent their pets from getting sick in the first place. Below are some of the most common questions we hear from enlightened people who’d rather keep their pets out of the veterinarian’s office.

Q: My dog came from a shelter three years ago. He’s highly allergic, and I’ve tried everything to relieve his chronic itching, including cortisone shots. But nothing has worked. Help!

A: Believe it or not, our first recommendation is to look into your dog’s emotional state. Many shelter animals suffer from feelings of abandonment. They may even have a history of abuse from their previous family, and these kinds of traumas can exacerbate allergy symptoms.

Dogs with this kind of problem respond well to flower essences—tinctures made from the blossoms of flowering plants—or medicinal herbs, both of which can act upon the emotions. Anaflora’s Return to Joy flower essence formula is a good place to start as a broad-spectrum healer for abused animals. Use according to the package instructions for four weeks, then follow with a product called Anaflora’s Allergy. Just add ten drops to your pet’s drinking water each day.

Also, try switching his food to a home-prepared or hypoallergenic type such as California Natural, which contains no chemical preservatives. Add some chopped fresh vegetables and organic flaxseed or primrose oil to whatever you feed him. The flaxseed contains omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, and primrose oil contains gamma-linolenic acid, all of which have been proven to have anti-inflammatory effects and will help to quiet allergic reactions. The chopped fresh vegetables add what we call “life force” phyto-nutrients (vitamins, minerals, and enzymes) that are potent antioxidants, which help control inflammation by reducing free radicals.

Vitamin B6, a natural antihistamine, along with the Dr. Goodpets homeopathic Scratch Free and Earth Animal’s Herbal No More Itch, will aid in healing the skin. If your dog is still having difficulty and you want to avoid the long-term use of steroids, an alternative veterinarian can evaluate his condition and recommend an appropriate nutritional program.

Q: What’s the best diet for keeping an animal fit and healthy for a long, long time?

A: A simple method would be to select an all-natural dog or cat food as a base and then add some superior fresh ingredients of your own. The reason you need to supplement is that pet food is processed at a high temperature, which kills off essential vitamins and minerals. Reduce the recommended feeding amount by 25 to 35 percent, and add your own mixture of fresh meat, chicken, or egg yolk (raw or partially cooked to avoid contamination), or tofu, cooked whole grains, and fresh chopped veg...
