Pet Lyme Disease Treatment Stevens Point WI

Our sheltie contracted Lyme disease last summer. Antibiotics worked initially but she’s had two relapses. Are there any alternative therapies that might help? While your dog is taking the drugs, give her a probiotic, such as acidophilus or lactobacillus, to keep her intestinal bacteria in balance.

Practitioner's Corner—About Pets: Lyme Disease

By Katherine A. Kahn, DVM

Q: Our sheltie contracted Lyme disease last summer. Antibiotics worked initially but she’s had two relapses. Are there any alternative therapies that might help?

A: The relapses suggest to me that your dog might benefit from another round of antibiotics; if your vet recommends it, I’d go ahead. While your dog is taking the drugs, give her a probiotic, such as acidophilus or lactobacillus, to keep her intestinal bacteria in balance. You can add it to the dog’s food in liquid or capsule form—just make sure you’ve checked the expiration date and the batch is fresh.

I’ve had success using the Chinese herb Smilax, which has strong antibacterial properties and relieves joint pain, too. I combine it with a Chinese herbal formula that helps get rid of lingering infections by fortifying the immune system and improving blood circulation. Usually I keep the animal on this combination for one to three months.

Some practitioners have reported remarkable success with the homeopathic treatment Ledum. Dosages will vary, so you should consult a vet who has treated Lyme disease with homeopathy or a homeopath who has experience with animals.
