Practitioner's Corner—About Pets: Fleas and Ticks
By Bob and Susan Goldstein
Q: Last year we resorted to chemical medications and insecticides since our dog had a serious case of fleas and ticks, and brewer’s yeast and garlic weren’t working. But we’d like to skip the chemicals this year. Can you suggest anything else?
A: Not all brewer’s yeast products are created equal, so it may be worth another try. Search for products that contain dark, non-debittered yeast, not the light-colored yeast that has been processed to taste good. Your dog should be willing to eat it if you mix it with plain, low-fat yogurt.
Topical treatments can help as well: Try a good herbal shampoo such as Solid Gold, the herbal spray Quantum, and Earth Animal’s No More Fleas and Herbal Internal Powder. Also, Dr. Goodpets Scratch Free is an effective homeopathic remedy that can be added to an animal’s drinking water. And make sure your dog wears an herbal flea collar at all times.
Sometimes chemicals are temporarily necessary if the infestation is particularly heavy. If you must use them, you should also use a chemical detoxifier such as Chemotox drops, which can help the body discharge any chemical residues. The product is made by Homeo Vetix and is available through an alternative veterinarian, who can instruct you how to use it properly.
