Practitioner's Corner—About Pets: Diet and Nutrition

By Bob and Susan Goldstein

Q: What’s the best diet for keeping an animal fit and healthy for a long, long time?

A: A simple method would be to select an all-natural dog or cat food as a base and then add some superior fresh ingredients of your own. The reason you need to supplement is that pet food is processed at a high temperature, which kills off essential vitamins and minerals. Reduce the recommended feeding amount by 25 to 35 percent, and add your own mixture of fresh meat, chicken, or egg yolk (raw or partially cooked to avoid contamination), or tofu, cooked whole grains, and fresh chopped vegetables. We think organic products are best, since even if you use a food with no chemical additives or preservatives, your pet is exposed to environmental toxins simply by living close to the ground and to the floor in your house. So you don’t want to add to the animal’s toxic load.

Our top recommendation, though, is for a product called Dr. Harvey’s Organic Dog (or cat) Food Premix, a blend of organic grains, herbs, vegetables, and nutrients. Because it hasn’t been cooked, it contains biologically active vitamins and minerals. It’s not a complete food, though, so you still need to add fresh protein, water, and oil. The package instructions will tell you what type and how much.
