Practitioner's Corner—About Pets: Anxiety and Allergies

Provided by:

By Bob and Susan Goldstein

Q: My dog came from a shelter three years ago. He’s highly allergic, and I’ve tried everything to relieve his chronic itching, including cortisone shots. But nothing has worked. Help!

A: Believe it or not, our first recommendation is to look into your dog’s emotional state. Many shelter animals suffer from feelings of abandonment. They may even have a history of abuse from their previous family, and these kinds of traumas can exacerbate allergy symptoms.

Dogs with this kind of problem respond well to flower essences—tinctures made from the blossoms of flowering plants—or medicinal herbs, both of which can act upon the emotions. Anaflora’s Return to Joy flower essence formula is a good place to start as a broad-spectrum healer for abused animals. Use according to the package instructions for four weeks, then follow with a product called Anaflora’s Allergy. Just add ten drops to your pet’s drinking water each day.

Also, try switching his food to a home-prepared or hypoallergenic type such as California Natural, which contains no chemical preservatives. Add some chopped fresh vegetables and organic flaxseed or primrose oil to whatever you feed him. The flaxseed contains omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, and primrose oil contains gamma-linolenic acid, all of which have been proven to have anti-inflammatory effects and will help to quiet allergic reactions. The chopped fresh vegetables add what we call “life force” phyto-nutrients (vitamins, minerals, and enzymes) that are potent antioxidants, which help control inflammation by reducing free radicals.

Vitamin B6, a natural antihistamine, along with the Dr. Goodpets homeopathic Scratch Free and Earth Animal’s Herbal No More Itch, will aid in healing the skin. If your dog is still having difficulty and you want to avoid the long-term use of steroids, an alternative veterinarian can evaluate his condition and recommend an appropriate nutritional program.
