Homeopathic Remedies for Urinary Tract Infections

Homeopathic Remedies for urinary tract infections
Homeopathy, a safe and nontoxic healing method used since the 1800s, offers a safe way to get rid of (and prevent) UTIs. Homeopathic medicine uses minute doses of natural materials (plants, animals, or minerals) to stimulate the immune system to heal. Choose the most appropriate remedy on the basis of your specific emotional and physical symptoms. Homeopath Dana Ullman, MPH, author of Essential Homeopathy: What It is & What It Can Do for You (New World Library, 2002), recommends the following three remedies commonly used to treat UTIs:

Cantharis—consider if pain is burning and cutting before, during, and after urination.

Sarsaparilla—consider if pain is severe at the end of urination, and there is burning pain with constant urging; a characteristic but not common symptom is that urine can be passed only while standing.

Pulsatilla
—consider if there is pain during and after urination as well as when lying down, and you experience dry mouth, but no thirst. Ullman recommends taking the 6, 12, or 30th potency of the remedy every two hours during intense symptoms, and every four hours for less intense symptoms. If there isn’t some type of obvious improvement in 24 hours, try another remedy under the care of a homeopathic physician.

Reminder: If you are susceptible to urinary infections, stop eating sugar since sugar feeds the bacteria, and avoid alcohol and caffeine since both can be dehydrating and irritating to the urinary tract. Dark green vegetables, asparagus, and red and blue fruits such as plums, blueberries, and raspberries are your fruit and vegetable allies, but avoid citrus fruits when you have a UTI since these can weaken the beneficial action of vitamin C and cranberry juice.
