Health Matters—Soothe Sandal Sores

Provided by:

By Jessie Rosen

Every summer, women make their annual sacrifice to the fashion gods—sexy sandals in exchange for a foot full of painful blisters. It’s a centuries-old style quandary—you don’t suppose Cleopatra wore those fabulous gold flats free of pain, do you?—that’s not likely to change despite the pinched toes and souvenir calluses. With warm weather finally here and straw espadrilles (ouch!) hotter than ever, try these easy, blister-beating tips.

• Nip blisters in the bud. Wear new shoes around the house with thin socks. The shoes will stretch, plus you’ll discover any pre-blister pinches in time to stick a Band-Aid on the spot before the shoes make their official debut.

• Use the power of flowers. “Echinacea, the famed cold-fighting herb, has excellent healing elements once a blister has formed,” says Rebecca Hart, a homeopathic practitioner in Brooklyn, New York. Apply an echinacea tincture to the blister, make a poultice with the powdered herb found in capsules, or try a simple echinacea cream like Bioforce’s–made with pansy extract for additional flower power.

• Heal with honey. Should a blister pop, coat it with honey. A natural antiseptic, honey prevents infection and reduces inflammation. Simply place a dollop of the pure stuff on the sore and cover with a bandage.
