Heal Thyself - Jet Lag or Health Lag?
By Linda Knittel
Homeopathy packs light and hits hard—making it the perfect companion for the globe-trotting traveler.
The fact that homeopathic remedies come in small, easy-to-carry vials of tiny pellets makes them convenient when it comes to travel, but their ability to treat travel-related ailments is the real reason to pack them. Homeopathic remedies are made from minute preparations of natural substances, which in larger amounts would cause the same symptoms one is trying to cure. Rather than suppressing symptoms, they trigger the body to heal itself.
When shopping for homeopathic formulas, look for remedies that most closely describe your specific symptoms, as several remedies may be indicated for similar conditions. Generally you can buy 6C, 12C, or 30C potencies. Follow the instructions on the vial, consult a homeopath, or check out a good guidebook such as The World Travelers’ Manual of Homeopathy by Colin Lessell (The C.W. Daniel Company Ltd., 2004) for more specific dosing instructions.
Jet lag
• Gelsemium sempervirens helps if you feel weak and have difficulty keeping your eyes open after a flight.
• Cocculus indicus can ease the nausea and dizziness of jet lag. Diarrhea
• Podophyllum peltatum helps traveler’s diarrhea that is accompanied by a headache and foul-smelling stool and breath.
• Arsenicum album is helpful if your symptoms include chills, cramps, and intense weakness. It is also indicated for food poisoning.
Motion sickness
• Cocculus indicus is useful when you have dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and irritability. Look to Cocculus if you feel worse in fresh air and worse after eating or drinking.
• Tabacum is the perfect remedy for motion sickness that brings with it cold sweats, a pale face, and feelings of faintness. This is the type of motion sickness that improves with open air and worsens in stuffy rooms.
Indigestion
• Antimonium crudum may ease indigestion if your nausea is more pronounced at night and in the early morning, and you have a tendency to be thirsty in the evening.
• Bryonia alba is indicated if you are suffering indigestion after eating rich or fatty foods. The food may lie in the stomach undigested—feeling like a heavy lump. You may feel worse with any motion and may be constipated.
Food Poisoning
• Arsenicum album is the first remedy to consider for food poisoning. Signs include diarrhea accompanied by anxiety. You may also feel restless or anxious and thirsty for small sips of cold drinks.
• Urtica urens is the remedy of choice for shellfish poisoning, particularly if accompanied by hives that itch.
• Veratrum album may help when you are experiencing severe vomiting (frequently described as projectile vomiting) along with diarrhea, and/or if you are feeling faint from vomiting.
Bites and Stings
• Apis mellifica is useful if the insect sting is swollen red, warm to the touch, and improves with cold compresses. Allergic reactions to bee stings may instantly respond to Apis.
