Exercise Your Way to Employee of the Year

If your career goals include climbing the corporate ladder, you may do well to take the stairs—or better yet, the StairMaster—especially in light of a British study that shows exercise can boost job performance by about 15 percent. Presented at the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual meeting, the study followed 200 people—mostly office workers with fairly sedentary jobs—whose employers offered gym access.

The employees filled out questionnaires twice a day—at the workday’s beginning and end—evaluating their job performance, mood and whether they’d exercised. The most common activity was 45 to 60 minutes of aerobics, usually done during lunchtime, although some opted to do yoga, lift weights or play basketball. On the days they exercised, the employees gave themselves a higher rating for their time management, mental and interpersonal performance, and work output than on days they didn’t exercise.

They also reported that working out improved their mood, helped them cope better with office problems and led them to experience less afternoon fatigue. So next time your resolve to exercise is wavering, consider this: Daily exercise may just get you that promotion you’ve been angling for!
