Thinking of cutting down on your coffee intake? Well, don’t do it for health reasons, because the good buzz on coffee just keeps getting stronger. While researchers have stopped short of suggesting doctors actually prescribe coffee, they’ve repeatedly shown that the much-maligned beverage has positive impacts on a variety of ailments, including asthma, type-2 diabetes, lack of stamina and focus, and even Parkinson’s disease. Last year, a University of Scranton study had coffee beating all other foods and beverages, including hometown favorites tea and cranberries, in antioxidant levels.

And the good news just keeps coming. A new study suggests that the more coffee we drink, the lower our risk for alcohol-induced cirrhosis of the liver—22 percent for a single cup a day. Scientists pored over the medical records of some 125,000 patients from Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California, to discover this correlation, which echoes results from earlier studies in Japan and the US. All of the studies noted that the response was dose related—the more cups you drink, the better off you are. But none of them got us any closer to understanding which ingredient in coffee is so beneficial. While some nominate caffeine as the wonder ingredient, researchers across the board agree about the need for more testing. In the meantime, take a pass on that second martini and have a cup or two of java instead.
