Over 100 years ago a team of gifted craftsmen labored for 11 months to create The Gamble House. Inspired by the designs of Pasadena architects Charles and Henry Greene, the craftsman contractors led by John and Peter Hall, Scandinavian woodworkers, cut, turned, joined, carved, and hand-rubbed 17 species of wood into the House and furnishings that today are recognized as one of the greatest achievements in American architecture and craftsmanship. ************************************* Tour Guide: Jim Ipekjian Contemporary woodworker Jim Ipekjian has studied the art and craft of the Greenes and the Halls for more than 20 years, and has an intimate knowledge of how their works were created. Mr. Ipekjian's Details {e_description}amp; Joinery tour reveals from a craftsman's point of view how The Gamble House was crafted. He discusses why woods were chosen, explains joinery techniques, and explores the thinking and collaboration that led to the actual craftsmanship. He examines details of the house and furniture, and reveals the intricacies of inlay, metal work and art glass created especially for the House. Fire {e_description}amp; Light looks at the Greene's evolution of style; what led them to create some of the most celebrated art glass produced in an architectural setting; how the works were designed and produced; and the journey taken by the glass artists/craftsmen of the period. ************************************** Tour Guide: John Hamm Contemporary glass artist and Gamble House docent John Hamm has immersed himself in the history of art glass and the Arts and Crafts movement. He has restored glass fixtures in historic structures and has created period-appropriate glass for many contemporary craftsman-style houses. The Gamble House presents: BEHIND THE VELVET ROPES A focus tour that allows you to experience The Gamble House at a leisurely place. On this tour you are invited behind the scenes to visit parts of the House not available on the 1-hour tour. You walk inside the rooms and, with flashlight in hand, examine at close quarters exquisite craftsman details. Your docent, wearing white gloves, will open doors and drawers to reveal gems that can only be seen close up. You have time to appreciate the ambiance of this National Historic Landmark, and enjoy some light refreshments in the gallery. Behind the Velvet Ropes 2.5 hour tours are conducted by docents with years of experience and a great deal of passion.
